ANC vs Passive Noise Isolation — Not the Same Thing

Passive noise isolation is just physical blocking — an eartip sealing your ear canal, or ear cups covering your ears, muffling outside sound mechanically. Every in-ear or over-ear product has some passive isolation, ANC or not.

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) goes further: a microphone on the earbud or headphone picks up ambient noise, and the device generates an inverse sound wave in real time to cancel it out before it reaches your ear. This is active, electronic noise reduction — not just a physical seal.

How ANC Actually Works, Simply

1. A microphone continuously listens to ambient sound around you

2. The earbud's processor generates a sound wave that is the exact inverse of that ambient noise

3. Playing that inverse wave alongside your music cancels out much of the ambient noise before it reaches your eardrum

4. The result: consistent background noise (like AC hum, traffic drone, or airplane engine noise) drops noticeably, while your actual audio stays clear
